@Fimbulwinter No, he couldn’t. If he didn’t scheme against SJ back then, SJ’s heart for his parents wouldn’t turn completely cold. SJ could even forgive them for sending him to Tian’ling with just spiritual stones and reconcile with his parents. At that time, with their guilty conscience, his talents, and their bloodline, the probability they would chose SJ as the next Patriarch was pretty high. So, tricking SJ back then was important to ensure SJ to never returned to the Su.
His problem is, he has ungrateful and greedy heart. He’s just the Patriarch’s orphaned nephew. They didn’t have to, but the Su couple saved him from his paternal family (the Li) and give him shelter. Sure, SJ’s circumstances and his own circumstances afterward were a great temptation for him to get a misconception that the Su was belong to him. But, no matter what, he’s still just their adopted son. If he didn’t tried to get rid of SJ, they could live well as brothers, share the responsibilities and blessings as part of Su Clan regardless who would be the patriarch at that time.
